We spent the rest of the day lounging in Rielle’s room, and by the time Rielle had stolen a bottle of red wine from the kitchen and we had sifted through most of her closet as if it were a boutique, I had almost forgotten where I was.

Rielle stood in front of the floor-length mirror dressed in a long lime-green gown. “I look like a toad.”

I burst out laughing as I sprawled along the bed in an oversized pink dress, propped up on one elbow. “You look…” I tried to form words; any words would do. “Spring-like,” I managed.

Rielle groaned. “What possessed me to buy this?” She winced. “I am so far away from spring-like I might as well renounce the whole season.”

I chuckled but tried to suppress it with a cough. “I think it’s pretty,” I said, backtracking, but Rielle rolled her eyes and started to tug the gown back off.

“At least it’s the King’s money.” She let the gown fall to the floor and stepped on it as she walked back to her sizeable wooden closet in her underwear.

“He pays you?” I frowned.

“Us,” she said, picking out a flowing silver gown made of tulle and chiffon, “when you have passed your trial.” She held the dress up to her frame. “It’s his only redeeming quality. Call it incentive.”

I met her eyes in the mirror and frowned; I wasn’t sure why, but I had expected not to be paid. I was dragged to the Guild against my will, after all. I bit my lip. “The King,” I started, “have you met him?”

Rielle scoffed. “By the Gods, no.” She shook her head. “Eidrick would never let us within five miles of him.”

I nodded, wondering again why the illicit king was so secretive. There had to be a reason for it, but I was struggling to fathom why someone with so much power would be so contained to his own castle.

“Speaking of whom,” she continued, pulling me away from my thoughts, “he will be beside himself when he sees you in that dress.”

We both eyed the gorgeous dark gown hanging on the back of the door, and I bit my lip again, trepidation starting to pool its way into my chest.

“What makes you say that?” I frowned. I wanted her to tell me how much she knew or how much of that blood tie was clearly visible.

“Just a hunch.” She shrugged, “Nothing fun ever happens here, so forgive me for indulging.”

I swept my gaze back to the dress. He wouldn’t see me in it anyway, and the trickle of an odd disappointment urged me to say, “Maybe I should wear something else.” She must have seen something on my face, or even caught the scent of the change in my emotions, because she shot me a sly smirk. I rolled my eyes at her and threw a plush feather pillow at her head. “We are assassins not tempters,” I said.

She laughed loudly and caught it with ease. “Oh, so you are an assassin now?” she teased.
